A Carthusian : Hymn to Silence

A Carthusian
HYMN TO SILENCE

Silence: absence of all that could afflict
The listener; deep tranquillity of night.
Silence: docile heart, the unchanging sea
Of self awareness, stillness when the world is asleep.

Silence: the dread of a city derelict
In moonlight, the atmosphere of God, the call
Of eternity in the soul. Silence: the joy
Of adoration, stillness when the world is asleep.

Silence: the hands linked in prayer, strict
Recollection above the busy mind;
The gaze of the ardent heart in faith to love
With divine goodness, stillness when the world is asleep.

Silence: virtue’s gentle conquest; tricked
Eve made humble, contrite the countenance;
The mellowed and sweet heart that turns to God
In burning desire, stillness when the world is asleep.

Silence: Mary’s heart. Her eyes depict
The schooled waiting of trust, the solitude
Of love gazing beyond the future when dawns
The silence of God; stillness when the world is asleep…
