DES: Sad Sketches

Sweden - Wednesday 15 April 2009

Dear Dennis,

Thanks for your letter dated 26 March.

So, it’s quite impossible to send you any material such as books, records and films in the future? I can’t see how this could upset the prison "re-education system". Who are these "approved suppliers", some kind of prison mail-order catalogue? Do they just throw away the stuff people send, or do they have some kind of annual auction, where they sell it to the highest bidder? The conservative idea of the prison as a centre for re-education is quiet interesting. I think it was Carl Panzram (or Jack Henry Abbot) who wrote in his prison-memoirs about taking a wild animal, shut it up in a cage for several years, poke it with a stick from time to time, which will make it run amok when it’s supposedly released upon the outside world again. I’ve searched the prison homepage, and I haven’t found any information about prohibitions for sending items to the prisoners, and of course nothing about rules for cheques and postal orders etc… Including another five-pound-bill in this letter, hope you get it…
